While missing a front tooth may not seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, to someone with a gap in their smile, it can be a great source of discomfort or embarrassment. Your front teeth are front and center every time you smile, and even though all of your teeth are important, it can be harder to cope with the loss of a front tooth as opposed to one of the back teeth.
If you or someone you know is missing a front tooth, great news — there are options for replacing it! Read on to learn more and see which option is right for you.
Option #1: Dental Implant + Crown
If you’re looking for the best way to replace a missing front tooth, this is it. Dental implants are sturdy and made to integrate with the surrounding bone. They’re also long-lasting; chances are, you’ll have the same one for the rest of your life. Once the implant is in, a crown is fitted over it (made to look just like the missing tooth, if the tooth is available for an impression). With this option, people may never know you were missing a tooth!
Option #2: Tooth-Supported Fixed Bridge
A bridge consists of three parts: the pontic (a crown in the middle that replaces the missing tooth) and two anchors covering the adjacent teeth that are cemented into place. While bridges can look very natural and can last a very long time, they do require the “shaving down” of the surrounding healthy teeth, which can pose a health risk to those teeth and may cause them to require replacement down the road.
Option #3: Removable Partial Denture
While a denture does not replace the absence of the tooth, and as such, the remaining teeth will probably move closer together in order to fill that space. However, a denture may be a good option because it is durable and designed to last for many years, as long as it is well-maintained.
